Details     Description

Artist Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Marie Lautrec’s mature paintings are of a striking originality . But he borrowed pictorial ideas freely and was saturated in the art of his time. This picture suggests more than one hard look at Degas , the artist he admired most. The ungainly attitude of the nude , dramatised by the tilted floor plane, and the shade of rust in the hair recall that artist’s pastel , The Tub , executed ten years before . The pellucid blue tonality may have been siphoned off from a Cezanne Provencal landscape. Nevertheless, the picture remains a vital, individual creation.
